Don’t Forget the Fifth Wall

Rain, rain, go away.   If April showers bring May flowers, then we’d like to know what cold, sleet and snow bring!  All this time trapped indoors may have left you less than satisfied with your existing, possibly dulling, interior paint color choices.  If you are contemplating a change, you will want to keep in mind your ceilings.

Don’t Forget the Fifth Wall

Ceilings typically represent one sixth of a room’s space.  We pay a lot of attention to our flooring and our walls, but ceilings are often neglected.

While white can be a great option for damaged ceilings, small spaces and low walls, there is a world of possibilities if you are willing to try something different.

Large rooms with dark floors, dark furnishings or high ceilings can seem unbalanced, or even impersonal, with starkly contrasting bright white ceilings.  Consider trying a softer shade of the wall color or even a warm white for a little added intimacy.  Feeling a little crazy?  Play around with glazing or high-sheen paints.  An added benefit to trying something fun and unique on your ceiling is that you don’t have to worry about fingerprints or nicks.  The look will last for years.

If dark or glazed ceilings are too intimidating, try a tone-on-tone look by using different shades of the same color.  Painting ceilings the same color as the walls offers several benefits.  If the color is light, it can give the room an open feeling the same way white ceilings bring height and contrast.  If the color is dark, it can give the room a sense of intimacy and enveloped warmth.  Either way, it adds just a touch of unexpected character.

It’s important to remember lighting when choosing your potential ceiling color.  A room with lots of light, or a room that you don’t mind feeling small, can handle darker shades.  A room with low lighting or low ceilings is a great candidate for lighter paint shades.  Sheen is affected by light, too.  Flat paint will cover flaws, while a satin or eggshell will reflect light and draw attention to texture or flaws.
