Spring starts early in Texas. It’s one of the many reasons we love our great state. It brings green grass, flowering trees and perfect painting weather. It’s a great time to catch up on “honey do’s” and give your home a facelift.
While exterior painting can technically be done throughout most of the year in Texas, there are several benefits to doing it in the spring. First, if you’re planning on doing any gardening, it would be nice to know that you don’t have to worry about paint and painters in your new flower beds. Second, the rainy fall and winter seasons can really do a number on exterior wood. Moisture in the form of rain, snow, ice and extreme humidity will gradually allow the paint to swell and get soft, which leads to cracking and peeling. It’s always best to get ahead of the curve and have your house painted before any exposed wood starts to rot. At Stephens Painting, our team is trained on how to repair rotted wood and replace damaged sills and siding, but it is more cost-effective for you to try to prevent these repairs in the first place. Third, and most importantly, is temperature. Exterior latex paint forms the strongest and most resilient bond when the weather is between 50 and 80 degrees, give or take. Yes, there are certain paints that allow painting down to 35 or 40 degrees, but one takes a greater chance that the paint will fail and flake off. Extreme high or low temperatures can cause paint to bubble, chip and even flake or peel.
Even though exterior painting can take place in the summer, fall and even some weeks in winter here in Texas, Spring is a really great time to get exterior painting done. Just as the winter is a great time to get interior painting projects completed. As the saying goes…”For everything there is a season”.
